A SEAFARING TRADITION

Steeped in more than a century of history, the Pensión Katrapona has always been associated with Getaria’s seafaring tradition. A unique place to welcome fishing boats, returning after days of work at sea.

The building that houses the Pensión Katrapona was built in 1901. For more than a century it consisted of a basement, ground floor, first floor and attic. At that time it was dedicated to brining, to preserve the fish brought in by the village’s fishermen.

In the 70s the basement and first floor functioned as a cafeteria and restaurant, activities that endure today, while in the early 80s a gastronomic society occupied the first floor and the attic.

A cañonazos (The sound of cannons)

Like many other words arising from an onomatopoeia, “Katrapona” refers to the sound of the guns once placed on the guesthouses’s current site, above the bay, by the ancient walls surrounding the town.

 

Getaria was of strategic importance to the British Navy in its campaign against the Napoleonic invasion.

The house was completely renovated in 2007, transformed into the cosy Pensión Katrapona. In 2015 we undertook work to outfit the guesthouse with modern conveniences, completely overhauled of the furniture to allow our guests to really unwind, installed free Wi-Fi, and upgraded the breakfast and cleaning services.

Right in the heart of Getaria, next to the Iglesia de San Salvador, you can access the beach on foot in about 5 minutes.

We have 8 rooms, one specially designed to accommodate families, covering approximately 30 square meters and equipped with a sofa bed. There is also the possibility of including a second extra bed.

Although the guesthouse does not have its own parking facility, by the waterfront and harbour there are parking areas, very close to our accommodations.
